A Sustainable shipyard

Hub for Inspiration and Innovation

Located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, we are situated in the perfect location to push forward-thinking creative ideas. A nearby university and international port bring additional resources.

AstilleroVerde
Green Shipyard

A home for healthy living, our shipyard boasts an orchard, greenhouse and tree nursery. We offer two meals a day to all employees, with enough on-site rustic housing for 15 people.

Model For Healthy Growth

Our eco shipyard aims to be an example to the world: a model that will inspire innovative construction, regenerative systems and transformation of coastal communities.

We aim to decarbonize the maritime sector, starting with our own AstilleroVerde shipyard, the headquarters of all our operations.

AstilleroVerde in Spanish translates to 'green shipyard' which describes our home in more ways than one. We are proud that AstilleroVerde may be one of the first sustainably built shipyards in the world. All infrastructure is built using renewable building materials.

The shipyard infrastructure is designed to support the land it inhabits, including the shipbuilding hangar, workshops, kitchen, open-air offices and housing.

Our gardens, tree nurseries and orchards create green spaces for recreation and food production. Permaculture systems are used to maintain a balance of resources. Everything from bio-waste to manufactured goods are reused.

AstilleroVerde

We believe that happy workers are healthy people. That is why we provide two-three organic vegetarian meals a day, with on-site housing available if needed. All of our food comes from organic farms within 100 km of the shipyard.

Our dream of building the world’s largest wooden cargo sailing ship is only possible with a passionate community of hardworking people. To support this community, we try to provide a model for healthy living as much as possible.

Our non-profit branch, also called AstilleroVerde, is responsible for initiating and supporting community development projects such as a bio-char production project and agroforestry workshops.

Our beautiful shipyard is located in the small coastal village of Punta Morales. We aim to set an example for natural shipbuilding techniques by incorporating nature into our construction site, thus preserving and protecting wildlife.

“As a biologist, I see AstilleroVerde as a joyful example of humans and nature coexisting. Dozens of beautiful tropical bird species call the shipyard home; chatty bay wrens nest in the cashew tree, brilliant turquoise-browed motmots keep you company in the treehouse office, and bright pink roseate spoonbills fish at the water’s edge. The mangroves lining the shore are an important and endangered habitat, and the fact that the shipyard is preserving their mangroves makes it a site of great ecological value.”
